Braindead (Peter Jackson, 1992)

Braindead a horror film from New Zealand

Braindead film is a characterized my a large number of film critics as the goriest zombie horror ever made. PeterJackson raised the blood bar to dizzying heights with this groundbreaking masterpiece. Jackson’s landmark splat – stick blacl comedy, in which custard pies are replaced with fountains from assorted body parts, was the most fountains from assorted body parts, was the most original and outstanding work of 1990’s and there will never be a bloodiest, more hilarious, more outrageous, gross – out zombie film.

The script of the film “Braindead

The script of the horror film “Braindead” was developed by Peter Jackson, Flames Walsh and Stephen Sinclair. I need to highlight the fact that the trio of writers had worked together also on the screenplay for Jackson’s film “Meet the Feebles” (1989) and went on the glory and Hall of Fame with the film trilogy “Lord of the Rings” (2001 – 2003).

The plot of “Braindead

The story is about a virus that transforms human being’s into living dead monsters. The story – plot is not developed as an apocalypses but the story line is restricted into the limits of a family and a neighborhood of WellingtonNew Zealand.

The style of “Braindead” film

Peter Jackson’s style of flamboyant gore de force includes “kung fu priests”, “point of view shots” and “murderous spinal column’s”. Also, Jackson used a large number of weapons like – blades and ornamental flying ducks to landowner blades and unbiblical cords.

The Soundtrack of Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Tobe Hooper, 1974)

The Soundtrack of "The Texas ChainSaw Massacre" (Tobe Hooper, 1974)

The Score of the masterpiece “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

As I have already mentioned on previous relative articles “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” is an independent film project and it’s among the most successful horror films ever. Texas Chainsaw Massacre had a huge impact on industry and actually redefined cannibal theme movies and enforced the “last girl” concept on the horror genre.

Before The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

On my previous article about “Origins and Inspirations” of Texas Chainsaw Massacre  I had mentioned that Tobe Hooper was influenced by the Wisconsin real crime cannibal case of Ed Gain. The same real crime case inspired also another one masterpiece of horror cinema the Alfred Hitchcock's film “Psycho” and after Texas Chainsaw Massacre the same real crime case inspired the masterpiece “Silence of the Lambs”.

I would like to highlight the fact that the soundtrack of Psycho is based dissonant strings and it was the trademark of the genre for many decades. Also, Psycho’s score is the most copied film soundtrack in the history of cinema.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is different

The score of Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a mixture of country songs heard on radio and they are used very cleverly to counterpoint the horrific visuals. Also during the scene with the extreme close shot of Sally’s eyes the music was played by Tobe Hooper and Wayne Bell from bassy rumbles through clanging cymbals to stings.

There are also extreme follies from animals like pigs and caws. But, the most influential of all is the revving and whirring sound of the ever – presented CHAINSAW.

Personal Opinion

The Texas Chanisaw Massacre  is a not just a film it’s a masterpiece. Students and film fans must study it frame by frame. It’s a unique project produced with low budget but huge passion, talent and unique point of view. Texas Chainsaw Massacre has a unique mood it’s summer and the weather is very hot, the plot structure of the film presentes in 80 minutes the innocence of the youth, the barbarism of a weird family and bizarre crimes somewhere into the unknown Texas.

Even, with limited resources Tobe Hooper produced an unforgettable film. All of as who love, study, write direct or produce films have to respect and follow film making rules of cinema geniuses like Tobe Hooper.

The soundtrack of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (Tobe Hooper, 1974) film consists of the following songs.

(1). “Fool for a Blonde” - Roger Bartlett  & Friends
(2). “Waco” – Timberline Rose
(3). “Daddy’s Sick Again” - Arkley Blue
(4). “Misty Hour of Daylight” – Arkley Blue
(5). “Feriade las Flores” – Los Cyclones
(6). “Poco a Poco No” – Los Cyclones
(7). “Glad Hard” – Timberline Rose

You can watch on youtube the “Fool for Blonde” song - Tribute to Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Origins and inspiration for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre film (Tobe Hooper, 1974)

Origins and inspiration for the The Texas Chainsaw Massacre film (Tobe Hooper, 1974)

“Who will survive and what will be left of them?”

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Tobe Hooper, 1974) is one of the most significant and box office successful horror films. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an independent film written, produced and directed by Tobe Hooper the majority of film makers and actors   were students from University of Texas at Austin. The film Texas Chainsaw Massacre has a huge impact on film industry and it’s considered that redefined the “last girl” horror film concept.

Tobe Hooper's  inspiration for Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a “meat movies” according to a large number of very well established film critics and academics because the main concept of the film beyond the title! The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is not a film about Chainsaws and not a film about a massacre.  It’s a film about a cannibals family in Texas fictionalizing  the most bizarre crimes in American history through camera lens using “cinema verite” (documentary) film making style.

In the beginning of cinema the act of cannibalism was not shown on camera, films like “Dr X” (Michael Curtiz, 1932) and “Sweeney Todd:The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”  (George King, 1936) were the first films about fictional stories of cannibals.

Four decades later, in 1963 HG Lewis a southern independent filmmaker filmed the prototype for the gore, the legendary film “Blood Feast” and for the first time in cinema audience watched the cannibalistic intentions of fictional characters but there are restrictions to limb – lopping and tongue – pulling aplenty and there is no “human flesh consumed”. In 1972, Gary Sherman directed in London the film “Death Line” (in USA it was distributed) under the title “Raw Meat”. The plot structure of the film is based around the history of the “Man” a fictional character who was cannibal and he killed his victims in the tunnels around Russell Square tube station. In 1973 Fassbinder protégé Ulli Lommel directed the film “Wolves” / “Zaerlichekeit Der Voelte” the story of the film is about a true – life case of cannibal killer Fritz Haarmann.

Tobe Hooper’s idea about Texas Chainsaw Massacre

One Christmas during Tobe Hooper’s early life, the teenager Tobe Hooper was trapped in the hardware department of Montgomery Ward’s by the throng of seasonal shoppers. Tobe Hooper was looking around to find a way to escape he saw a chainsaw and immediately realized that the only way to get out from his trap was to use the chainsaw – the broad outline of the film’s plot and feel followed soon after.

The real crime case (cannibal case) of Wisconsin grave ripper and ghoul Edward Gein influenced the creation of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Kim Henkel co written the script of the film and during one interview she revealed that a local real crime case known as “Candyman Murders” influenced the script development and the creation of the film Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Also, Tobe Hooper said that EC Comics influenced him for the creation of plot structure.
