The film Halloween (1978) was directed by John Carpenter and it’s the most characteristic slasher film that dominate the horror genre during the 80’s. Actually the model was not knew but Halloween is the most recognized film of the 80’s slasher film and in my opinion the most recognized of all calender horror films like Friday the 13th, Saint Valentines say, Black Christmass etc. Beyond the slasher and calendar horror Halloween is a film that introduced to audience another one masked villain as Leather face in Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) but 1n 1978 it was time for Michael Myers (the masked villain in Halloween to dominate theaters and video clubs.
Halloween film - from trick or tip to Stalk’n ; Slash (Slice - n - Dice)
Halloween film was produced by Compass International Pictures and it’s based on the script of John Carpenter and Debra Hill. The Indy producer Irwin Yablans loved the John Carpenter’s second film “Assault on Precint 13” (1976). Yablans wanted to make a film inspired by John’s Carpenter’s idea for “The Baby sister Murderer's” - actually John Carpenter’s idea was the outline of the Halloween idea. Yablans and Carpenter sold the idea to Moustafa Akkad and independent financier who wanted to break into the US film industry. Halloween is not only a great idea for a horror film but also a film project available to be produced in low budget and limited resources.
Carpenter desired, asked and demanded complete and absolute creative control over the film project.
Debra Hill, had been script supervisor on Assault and co - wrote Halloween with John Carpenter the Halloween on a three week period. Actually, Debra Hill wrote the most of dialogue, her previous experience a babe sister helped her to write more realistic, authentic and interesting to audience dialogues. Debry Hill also helped the creation of Myers - the villain - killer of Halloween. as an evil, unstoppable and semi - mythic creature above any scientific explanation.
Halloween as cornerstone of slasher horror films
Halloween was the first film that established the model of slasher films. The rules of a slasher film are endlessly recycled but they must be followed by a “religious” faith and a dogmatic discipline.
The slasher film storyline structure - first appeared on Halloween (1978)
1. A traumatic event in the past creates a psychopathic killer
2. The killer is back to the place of events, usually on a specific date in the present that allows the slasher producers to use a special date (calender motif) in the title of the film.
3. The villain is back and kills a group of stupid teens of both sexes by using blades (knifes, machetes) often garden or farm implements (axes, arrows).
4. A final girl survives- as a result many slasher films are named as final girl films.
The cheap approach to make a slasher film and their proven profitability was the main reason for the production of a large number of slasher sub - genre horror films.
Halloween is one of the most recognized horror films om history of horror cinema. I have written a series of short articles to cover the original and the sequels films.
