Firstly - what is the Found Footage genre


Found Footage is a film making genre which is part pf cinema verite / documentary style of cinema. According to film critics, a film belongs to found footage genre when all or a substantial art of the film is presented as discovered film or video recording usually after a mysterious death or a missing person or a group of missing persons. The documentary influence on the found footage genre is obvious because the plot structure is developed as the events are presented through the camera as one or more of the characters speak on the camera. Also the filming may be done by the actors themselves as they perform the lines of the script. Found footage movies emphasize on the realism and the naturalizing acting.



Found footage started in 1980 with the Italian film and Japanese market oriented movie “Cannibal Holocaust” (Ruggero DeodatoRuggero Deodato). After 17 years the found footage genre was popularised with the film “The Blair Witch Project” (1999) and then in 2007 Oren Peli directed the milestone found footage film “Paranormal Activity”.

In 2012 the genre of found footage was enriched with the films “The Devil Inside” (William Brent Bell) “Haunted Poland” (Pau Maso), Chronicle (John Trank), Project X (Mina Nourizadeh), RFC3: Genesis (Paco Plaza), V/H/S (Ti West), War of the Worlds - The True Story (Timothy Hines), The Dinosaur Project (Sid Bennett), Grave Encounters 2 (John Poliquin), Paranormal Activity 4 (Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman), The Bay (Barry Levinson), Area 51 (Oren Peli).

The best crossing Horror Films in 2012




Among the top first four of the best box office crossing horror movies in 2012 are : “Paranormal Activity 4” with about 140 million revenue and “The Devil Inside” with about 101 worldwide box office revenue.

Beyond the top four box office crossing horror movies we can find more gems with great profitability ratios. Found Footage is alive and audience loves the genre.
