The Last Exorcism – supernatural horror from hell
“It will be my the last exorcism in my career, so you
can film it”
The Last Exorcism is a supernatural, found footage horror movie, produced in Louisiana's capital Baton Rouge. The film “Last Exorcism” has an interesting
point of view different from all the other supernatural films related with
possession. The film presents the story of a con artist evangelical minister
who use tips and techniques to create disillusions to people. According to his
words there are no exorcism only fraud. He accepts to participate in a documentary
film and to expose the fraud to audience while he will conduct his last
exorcism.
The plot structure of the “The Last Exorcism film”
Cotton
Marcus is an evangelical minister and lives with his wife and his son in Baton Rouge , Louisiana
Before he resigns
from the business of fake exorcism he agrees to expose his fraud techniques of
fake exorcism by participating in a documentary. The documentary crew is a
producer / director Iris Reisen and a cameraman Daniel Moskowitz. Cotton Marcus
is famous and receives requests every day.
Randomly he choose one request by a farmer. The farmer Louis Sweetzer
claims that his daughter Nell is slaughtering his animals because she is under
the command and control of a supernatural evil force. Cotton Marcus and documentary crew decide to
film the last exorcism and they drive at the Louis Sweetzer’s farm in a rural
area far away from Baton Rouge in deep Louisiana
When they
arrive at Louis Sweetzer farm Marcus listening the details of the case very
carefully – he announce to the Sweetzer family that Neil is possessed by a
powerful demon known as Abalam.
Marcus needs
time to set up the fraud, so he hides speakers and electronic props, to create
the illusion of driving out a demon by exposing them in front of the camera.
Marcus starts the ritual and applies all his techniques. The illusion is
successful the Sweetzer family believes that Neil was possessed and the
minister Marcus save the live of their loved daughter from the demon Abalam.
Marcus and
the documentary crew leave from Sweetzer farm by believing that they have cured
Neil by a mental state that was misdiagnosed as a possession.
But, the
unexpected happened. Nell mysteriously appears in Marcus motel room. Marcus
wants to help Neil and drive her to local hospital where doctors found her in
perfect physical condition. Marcus starts a small research and visits the local
pastor Joseph Manley seeking answers to questions about Sweetzer family and the
especially about Louis the father of the family and Nell. Local pastor can not
help him, he said that he has non any conduct with Sweetzer family for a long
time. At the same time Louis drives her daughter Nell from hospital to their
farm and he chains her to her bed and slice
his son Caleb in the face with a knife. Then Louis takes his injured son to the
hospital, during their absence from the farm Marcus and the documentary crew
they investigate Nell and the Sweetzer’s home. During the night there is a
great disturbance in the house. Marcus and the crew hear the baby crying.
Marcus and the crew find Nell in a hallway. They try to comfort her she drives
them into bathroom where they found a submerging baby doll in water and later a
dead cat is found by Marcus and the crew.
The same
night Nell steals a camera from the crew and she goes into a barn, corners a
cat and beats it to death with the camera. When she is back at the house goes
to Marcus’s room and she raises the camera over Marcus’s head. Documentary crew
stops her and discover Nell’s paintings – the first is depicts Cotton standing
in front of a flame holding a crucifix, the second shows three dead bodies that
are the three visitors to their farm – Cotton burned by the flame, Daniel
(cameraman) is decapitated and Iris hacked to pieces with an axe.
When Louis
returns to his home founds a recorded message to telephone answering machine.
It’s from local hospital, Nell is pregnant. Marcus is angry, blames Louis for
hiding him the truth. Louis insists that his daughter Nell is virgin and Demon
is responsible for her pregnancy. Marcus
recommends that Nell needs a psychiatrist (mental therapist) and not another
exorcism. Louis demands Marcus and the crew to leave from his property. While
they are ready to leave they hear noises upstairs from Nell’s room. They run
upstairs where they found Nell to have climbed atop her dresses. Nell slashes
Marcus’s hand with a knife and she runs outside of the house. The situation is
dangerous and the crew is leaving, as they enter their van they see Nell sitting
on the porch. Marcus approach Nell but she tackles him. The fight between Nell
and Marcus is heard by Louis who chases them with a shotgun. Louis wants to
kill Nell, Marcus wants to prevent the killing and offers for a second exorcism
to gain time.
During the
second and the last exorcism minister Marcus confronts the demon that has
possessed Nell and introduces itself as Abalam. Abalam agrees to release Nell
from her possession but wants from Marcus to stay silent for 10 seconds. Then,
demon Abalam starts breaking Nell’s fingers as it counts out loud. Abalam had
broken three fingers and Marcus yells Abalam to stop. Then demon turns to
Marcus and asks him if he wanted a blowjob.
The last
sentence of Abalam, starts the fire in Marcus thinking. Nell knows worlds of
sexual acts and he believes that she pretends to be possessed. Then Nell tells
to Marcus that he father of her baby is Marcus.
Marcus asked
the local pastor Manley, to came to house of Sweetzer’s as they prepare to
leave. After they departure from Sweetzer’s farm they visit a local coffee shop
to meet Logan the father of Nell’s baby. According to Logan
Marcus and
the film crew search in the woods. They see a large fire and a congregation of
hooded cultists led by local Pastor Manley. The grown of occultist and Marcus
with documentary crew watch Nell as gives birth to an inhuman child. Manley
takes the new born child and throws it into the fire. Then fire starts to grow rapidly while
demonic screams emanate from it.
The
religious faith shines into Marcu’s head and he runs inside the flames to
battle evil. Documentary film crew is discovered and they run away. Iris is
tackled by an occultists and she is killed by an axe. Daniel runs into the
wounds to escape through woods, but he is tired and stops to breath. Nell’s
brother Caleb appears and decapitates him. As a found footage film, after
camera man’s killing camera collapses to the ground, few second with stillness
and silence and as you can imagine the credits start to roll.
The Last Exorcism Production
Daniel Stamm had directed successfully the found footage horror film “A necessary death” and
he had an idea to explore the con artist exorcism scams told by the point of
view of innocent filmmakers. We have a crossover between villains at the Last
Exorcism (Abalam – Occultist) and actually make the film even more interesting.
The film was produced Eric Newman, Eli Roth, Marc Abraham and Thomas Bliss.

In the last exorcism participate: Patrick Fabian plays the part of Cotton Marcus (main character), Ashley Bell plays the part of Nell Sweetzer (the possessed girl), Iris Bahr plays the part of Iris Reisen (film director of documentary crew), Adam Grimes plays the part of Daniel Moskowitz (cameraman of the film crew), Louis Harthurn plays the part of Louis Sweetzer (the father of the possessed girl).
Also, Caleb Landry Jones plays the part of Caleb Sweetzer (brother of possessed girl), Tony Bentley plays the part of Pastor Manley, Shanna Forrestall plays the part of Mrs. Marcus, Becky Fly plays the part of Becky, Denise Lee plays the part of a nurse, Logan Craig plays the part of Logan and Jamie Alyson Caudile plays the part of occultist and Allen Bourdeux plays the part of an occultist.
Distribution of The Last Exorcism
The rights for distribution of Last Exorcism was bought by Lionsgate in February 2010. The film had its world premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival and it was introduced to audience by Eli Roth and Daniel Samm. Also it was screened in the San Diego Comic – Con International.
The Last Exorcism Campaign
The Last Exorcism is among the first horror films to use viral marketing strategies to capture the interest of the audience. On the film’s website it was a Chatroulette involving a girl who pretends to unbutton her top seductively, then stops and turns into a monster.
The commercial success of Last Exorcism
The film opened in August of 2010, it was opened in 2874 theaters and the amount of sales was $20,366,613 the first three days. The total amount in box office was $ 41 million and other $ 26,7 million in foreign markets. The budget of Last Exorcism was about $ 1,8 million.
