Creating Paranormal Activity a great horror film
Oren Peli is the man behind the Paranormal Activity. Oren Peli was first - time director and he was afraid of wired creatures as ghosts, demons and vampires but he was looking for a way to transform fear into something productive, positive and finally profitable. The idea and the basic concept of the film “Paranormal Activity” is based on relative experiences of Peli.
Peli started by the simple statement “we wanted to be as trustful as we could be” and for this reason he studied extensively paranormal phenomena and demonology. Actually, the result of his study was the use of “demon” in the screenplay rather than other creatures cause demons are the most malevolent and violent entities.
The second step was to use the most primal of humans - DARK “NIGHT” and for this reason the movie is filmed during the night.
The next step was to create believable scenes. Peli emphasize at believability rather than action and gore. He created believable scenes by using home cameras which offer him more raw and stationary format. Also there was no need for crew and also home cameras and mounted cameras on tripods offer more plausibility to scenes. Peli wants to emphasize on characters and plot structure rather than camera work.
Another one important factor for the increase of believability in Paranormal Activity was the use of “natural dialogue”. Peli used a technique known as “retroscrippting”. This technique it was used at the early days of cinema and as I know in the production of “Blair Witch Project”. According to this technique there is no real script and directors gives only outlines of the story and situations to actors and leave them enough place to speak and interact with other actors.
